How Alloy Pipes Are Manufactured: From Raw Material to Finished Pipe
Details
Alloy pipes are used in demanding applications such as chemical processing, oil and gas, power generation, heat exchangers, and marine engineering. Depending on the alloy grade, pipe size, manufacturing method, and application, different production and inspection processes may be required.
At XSHAlloy, we supply alloy pipes according to customer-specified grades, standards, dimensions, surface conditions, and inspection requirements.
The general manufacturing process can be summarized as:
Raw Material → Melting → Refining → Casting → Pipe Forming → Heat Treatment → Sizing → Surface Treatment → Cutting → Inspection → Packing

Raw Material

Production starts with raw materials selected according to the required alloy grade.
Depending on the material, the chemical composition may include elements such as nickel, chromium, molybdenum, iron, titanium, niobium, or other alloying elements.
Before production, the required material grade, standard, dimensions, quantity, and technical requirements are confirmed according to the order.

Melting and Refining

The raw materials are melted and refined to achieve the specified chemical composition and material cleanliness.
The exact melting and refining route depends on the alloy system and applicable production requirements. For special nickel alloys and high-performance materials, additional refining processes may be used where required.

Casting

After melting and refining, the alloy is cast into an ingot, billet, or other suitable semi-finished form.
For seamless alloy pipes, the billet becomes the starting material for subsequent piercing and forming processes. For welded pipes, suitable strip or plate material may be prepared for pipe forming and welding.

Pipe Forming

The forming process depends on whether the pipe is seamless or welded.
For seamless alloy pipes, the billet can undergo processes such as heating, piercing, hot extrusion, and rolling to form a hollow tube.
For welded alloy pipes, strip or plate is formed into the required tubular shape, followed by welding. The weld area can then undergo appropriate treatment and inspection according to the applicable specification.
The manufacturing route is selected according to the alloy grade, pipe dimensions, wall thickness, standard, and final application.

Heat Treatment

Heat treatment is an important step for many alloy pipe products.
Depending on the alloy and required delivery condition, processes such as solution annealing, annealing, or aging may be applied.
The purpose is to obtain the required metallurgical condition and mechanical properties while meeting the applicable material specification.

Sizing and Straightening

After forming and heat treatment, the pipe is processed to achieve the required outer diameter, wall thickness, length, and straightness.
Dimensional control is particularly important for alloy pipes used in pressure, heat exchanger, and process piping applications.

Surface Treatment

The surface condition is processed according to the material and customer requirements.
Possible treatments include pickling, grinding, polishing, or other specified surface finishing processes.
For projects with specific surface requirements, the surface condition can be confirmed before production.

Cutting

XSHAlloy supports standard and customized pipe lengths.
Pipes can be supplied in specified lengths or cut according to project requirements. Additional processing requirements can also be discussed depending on the order.

Inspection

Inspection is carried out according to the applicable standard and purchase requirements.
Depending on the product, inspection may include:
Chemical composition
Tensile strength and yield strength
Elongation
Hardness
Outer diameter and wall thickness
Surface inspection
Ultrasonic testing
Other non-destructive testing when required
Material Test Certificates (MTC) can be provided according to the order requirements, including EN 10204 3.1/3.2 where specified.

Packing and Delivery

After inspection, alloy pipes are packed according to their dimensions, surface condition, weight, and transportation requirements.
For export orders, XSHAlloy can coordinate packaging, documentation, cutting requirements, inspection arrangements, and international shipping based on the agreed delivery terms.
